Alert! Campus SuperStar auditions judge dishes out pointers
April 5, 2007
Fifty-nine out of three hundred contestants successfully weaved their way past the Campus SuperStar Round 2 Auditions held last Saturday (Mar 31). [ OMG JIE HUI, TOP 59! ] Only a third of them will make it into the coveted Top 20, and it is not simply a game of odds. One judge speaks his mind about how to impress and what pitfalls to avoid.
After a tiring nine-and-a-half-hour closed-door audition, which started at 1 pm at Toa Payoh HDB Hub last Saturday (Mar 31), the Campus SuperStar 2 judges have finally picked 22 boys [OMG JIE HUI, TOP 22 GUYS!] and 37 girls to proceed to the third and final round of auditions to be held on April 14 (Saturday) at Toa Payoh HDB Hub’s open stage. The names of the top 20 finalists will be announced at the end of the day’s auditions.
Mr Paul Chan, Vice-President (Branding & Promotions) of MediaCorp TV and one of the judges on the panel since the first round of auditions, said: “Round Three will be their last chance to earn a place in the Top 20, hence we expect them to avoid mistakes they made during the last two rounds of audition.” In addition, he even has some pointers for these 59 short-listed contestants.
Pointer 1: Don’t toot your own horn
When the judges ask you to give a reason why you should be given the chance to proceed to the next round, praises that you heap on yourself, such as “I am the best singer of all” and “I am the most handsome looking among all the male participants” will put the judges off. Even super stars like Jolin Tsai and Rain never said they are the best singers or the best-looking celebrity.
Remember that you are still in a competition and the final decision lies in the hands of the judges and viewers.
Pointer 2: Pick the right song
Many contestants picked songs that are better expressed by mature adults who have gone through a lot more in life. We don’t expect Campus SuperStar contestants to convey these emotions at such a young age. Instead, these songs raised goosebumps for us because it is difficult to reconcile a teen image with such a mature singing style.
Boys this age are just not suitable for songs by Jacky Cheung, Kelvin Tan Wei Lian, Li Sheng Jie and Andy Lau; while girls also put themselves in danger by choosing sad and emotional songs by Zhang Hui Mei, Landy Wen and Sandy Lam.
[Ahahaha, heard that Jie Hui? Don't sing Wen Bie le. Pick some young songs!]
Pointer 3: Have a good image
Boys should shave off their moustaches before coming for Round 3 of the auditions because moustaches just do not look good on television! Similarly, boys should wear a neat hairstyle that does not try to be a ‘morning after’ look because sometimes it is plain messy. They should tuck in their shirts properly. One boy’s shirt appearance even prompted a judge to question if he was trying to hide his ‘beer-belly’.
For the girls, it is fine to put on light make up but heavy make up should be kept within the nightclub.
[Hahahahaha. Shave Jie Hui! And yea, get a nice and neat hairstyle!]
Pointer 4: Don’t be too self-conscious about your braces
It is normal for boys and girls at this age to put on braces, but try not to be so conscious of it that you show no emotions when you are singing or when you are listening to the judges’ comments. If you try to ‘hide’ your braces, your face can end up looking really weird and twisted.
Pointer 5: Avoid over-passionate boyfriends or girlfriends
You might become a teen idol, and many of your fans would not expect you to be ‘attached’. Keep your relationship in the closet.
If you currently have a girlfriend or boyfriend, keep the passion in check! It will be embarrassing if you are caught on camera with love-bites, as one boy was spotted with what looked like one.
Pointer 6: Emote and emote
Do try to have a thorough understanding of the lyrics you are singing and be sincere and emotive when you sing. It is really not as much about showing off your singing techniques as sharing your feelings with the audience.
{I think Jie Hui kinda excels at this part]
Pointer 7: Don’t worry, be happy!
Try not to be pay too much attention to media reports which may add pressure and affect your performance. If you worry too much about getting into the Top 20, you will not be able to enjoy the moment on stage. Treat every performance as your last.
Family and friends will make a difference in helping to calm your nerves. If there is one occasion for them to unite and show their support, this is it: Campus SuperStar Round 3 Audition, 14 April Saturday at 1pm @ Toa Payoh HDB Hub’s open-air stage. Results will be announced at the end of the audition.
